Recalls, and when the dealer is the right call
No Honda or Acura recall pays for worn ignition wafers. Owners in federal complaints say the dealer refused coverage because the problem was "a sticky tumbler". Three older recalls do touch the ignition, and an open one costs nothing at a franchised Honda or Acura dealer, so look up your VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls before paying anyone.
Recall 02V-120 (2002) covers the electrical ignition switch, for stalling, on the 1997 to 1999 Accord, the 1998 to 2000 Civic, the 1997 to 1999 CR-V, Odyssey and Prelude, and the 1997 to 1999 Acura CL and 1999 TL. That switch sits behind the lock, a mechanic's or dealer's part.
Recalls 10V-364 (2010) and 12V-573 (2012) fix a shift interlock that lets the key out when the car is not in Park. The first covers the 2003 Accord, 2003 Civic and 2003 to 2004 Element, about 551,498 vehicles; the second covers the 2003 to 2004 Odyssey and Pilot and the 2003 to 2006 Acura MDX, 807,161 vehicles.
When a Honda key won't turn but the cylinder is fine
A locked steering wheel pins the cylinder until you ease the wheel each way while turning the key. A car that stalls or will not crank with the key turning normally needs a mechanic for the switch, battery or starter. A key that leaves the cylinder outside Park is the interlock fault in the recalls above. More checks for any make: car key won't turn.
Why the dealer's Honda ignition bill runs higher
Dealers and shops more often replace the whole assembly, which can leave you with one key for the ignition, another for the doors, and a chip to program. That is how a 2010 Pilot owner on Reddit heard $400 for the ignition alone and $1,100 to make one key work everything. A key that will not turn also means a tow, typically $125 to $200.
Honda ignition repair near you: what to have ready
Mention any piece of blade left inside. If a new key is cut by code, California law requires the locksmith to record your ID and the car's registration on the work order, so bring the registration or title along with ID in the same name. The van comes anywhere in San Diego County, 7 AM to 9 PM daily, typically 45 to 90 minutes after you call.
