Car Key Replacement in Encinitas

Expect $125 to $399 for most keys in Encinitas, programmed on the spot in a Leucadia driveway, a Cardiff beach lot or an Olivenhain ranch road. No tow north to Car Country.

Five communities make up the city, from the 101 inland past the 5: Leucadia, the downtown blocks by Moonlight Beach, the newer tracts off El Camino Real, Olivenhain and Cardiff. For most brand keys, locals get sent up the 5 to Car Country Carlsbad.

That trip is simple with a working key. Without one it starts with a flatbed up the freeway for $125 to $200, then a dealer quote of $230 to $750 by key type, with $100 to $180 for programming that often shows up as a separate line. If the fob has to be ordered, expect the car to stay put one to three days.

We skip all of that by bringing the key to the car. Blanks are bought direct, nobody is paying for a showroom or a service-department markup, and programming follows the procedure the dealer runs. The quote covers the drive from anywhere in the county, you get it before we set out, and each key comes with a one-year warranty.

The job happens where the car is parked.

Car key prices in Encinitas

Encinitas pays the same price as every other city in the county, with the drive included. The dealer column is a typical San Diego dealership quote for the same key, before tax.

Surf lots, the 101 and El Camino Real

Surf mornings bring their own calls. A fob that slipped out of a boardshort pocket at Swami's, a key buried somewhere in the sand at Moonlight Beach, a car locked with the key visible on the passenger seat in the Cardiff State Beach lot along the 101. Lockouts run $79 to $129, and a lost key gets made right where the car sits, sand and all.

Away from the beach, we meet drivers at the shopping centers where El Camino Real crosses Leucadia Boulevard, the Lumberyard on the 101 downtown, the Scripps Memorial Hospital campus on Santa Fe Drive, the Coaster station, and the MiraCosta San Elijo campus on Manchester Avenue in Cardiff.

The BMW store moved to Car Country

BMW owners here used to have a dealer on Encinitas Boulevard. That store closed and folded into the BMW dealer at Car Country, so now nearly every brand key, from Toyota and Honda to Subaru, Lexus and Mercedes, points up the 5 to the same few blocks. The Ford store in town is the main exception.

From Olivenhain or Cardiff, a car with no key reaches Car Country on a flatbed for $125 to $200. Then comes the key: about $250 for a Toyota chip key at a typical dealer, $500 for a Subaru smart key, $750 for a BMW smart key from the 2010 to 2018 years. Ours are $129, $259 and $399, programmed in your driveway. The full table sits on our pricing page.

Subarus, Tacomas and older Volkswagens

The keys we cut most in these driveways match the cars that carry boards and bikes: Tacoma and 4Runner keys, Outback and Forester keys, and Volkswagens from the Golf and Jetta years. A Subaru chip key starts at $139, a Tacoma remote key at $169, an older Volkswagen chip key at $169 and a Volkswagen flip remote key at $209.

Olivenhain's horse properties and long driveways add older pickups to the mix, and with them worn ignitions that only turn on the second try. Ignition repair costs $179 to $349 here and $350 to $700 through a dealer, and the replacement cylinder takes the key you already carry, so the truck still starts on a single key.

Encinitas questions

What will a new key cost me in Encinitas?

The usual range is $125 to $399, and the drive from anywhere in town is already inside that number. A Toyota chip key starts at $129, Honda smart keys from $239 and Subaru smart keys from $259, while European smart keys for Volkswagen, Audi and BMW run $309 to $449. You hear the figure for your exact year before we head over.

My fob got soaked in the ocean. Is it finished?

Usually, yes. Salt water reaches the circuit board and corrodes it within days, and drying it in rice rarely brings the remote back. If the car has a second working key, the replacement is priced as a spare, such as $249 for a Toyota smart key. If the soaked fob was the only key, the all-keys-lost process adds $60.

With the BMW dealer gone from town, where do I get a BMW key?

From us at your car, or from the BMW store at Car Country Carlsbad. Our price on a BMW remote key for 2001 to 2013 models comes to $349, where the dealer is around $650, and on the smart key used from 2010 to 2018 it is $399, where the dealer is near $750. BMW programming takes longer than most, so expect the van to stay a bit longer than it would for a Honda.

Do you come to the MiraCosta San Elijo campus in Cardiff?

Yes. The surface lots off Manchester Avenue are easy to work in, and a spare for an older Civic or Corolla is a quick job once we arrive: Honda chip keys start at $139 and Toyota chip keys at $129. Tell us the lot and row when you call, and bring your registration if the only key is gone.

Is Olivenhain too far out for the regular price?

No. Every quote includes the drive and Olivenhain carries no trip fee, so a home off Rancho Santa Fe Road pays the same as a Leucadia condo. The arrival window leans toward the long end of 45 to 90 minutes out there, and a gated driveway is fine as long as you send the code ahead.

Will a beach-lot lockout leave marks on the door?

No. A lockout runs $79 to $129, and we get the door open without harm to the frame or the weatherstrip, which matters on older trucks and vans with tired seals. If the key is sitting on the seat of a car in a beach lot, tell us which lot and the nearest cross street so the van can find you without a second call.
