Car Key Problems by Make, and What Each Dash Message Means
Most dash key warnings mean a weak fob battery, a key the car stopped trusting, or one part known to fail on one make family. Find your message and try the free step first.
Each warning in the table belongs mostly to one make family. GM shows Service Theft Deterrent System, Nissan shows Key ID Incorrect, Mazda shows Keyless System Malfunction. The words tell you which system complained, and that points to the page with the answer.
Some no-starts are not key problems at all. When a push-button car will not start, the cause is often the 12-volt battery or the brake switch rather than the fob. Both belong with a mechanic, and we say so during the call, so nobody drives out to sell you a key that changes nothing.
Below the table, twelve pages each cover one problem that clusters on one make family, from worn Honda ignitions to the lost Subaru key a dealer answers with a new key computer. Each lists the years, the part, both prices and any recall that touches it. Before you pay anyone, look the VIN up at nhtsa.gov/recalls: open recalls are free work at a franchised dealer for your make. With a dealer quote already in hand, send us the figure for ours.
What the message on your dash usually means
Find the words or the light on your dash, then read across to the makes that show it, what it usually means, one free thing to try and the page that goes further. If the free step works, you may not need us at all.
| Message or light | Usually seen on | What it usually means | Try this first | Read next |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Service Theft Deterrent System" | Chevrolet, GMC, Buick | The car did not accept the key or the lock cylinder's sensor. Battery cables, grounds and wiring faults raise the same message and belong with a mechanic. | Leave the key in On about 10 minutes; once the security light quits flashing, turn it off and start. Some models want three cycles. | GM theft deterrent no-start |
| Security light flashing, engine cranks and dies | Older Chevrolet and GMC | Same family as the message above: the immobilizer did not see a key it knows, or the cylinder's Passlock sensor tripped. | Try the spare key. If the spare fails too, run the same 10-minute relearn before paying anyone. | GM security light fix |
| Security light flashing, engine cranks and dies | Toyota | The immobilizer did not find a key it knows, so it will not let the engine run. | Try the spare key. A spare that runs the car points at the first key, not the car. | Car won't recognize key |
| "Key ID Incorrect" | Nissan, Infiniti | The car heard a fob but not the right code. Usually a tired fob battery, or radio interference from chargers, toll tags, other keys or an aftermarket alarm. | Move phones, chargers and other keys away from the console, then press start with the fob touching the button. | Car won't recognize key |
| "No Key Detected" | Ford, Nissan, Chevrolet | The car cannot hear the fob: its battery is weak, or the fob is out of range. | Look up the backup spot for the fob in the owner's manual, hold the fob there and press start. | Car won't recognize key |
| "Key Not Detected" | Mazda, Toyota, Lexus, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru (as "Access key not detected") | The same fault in different wording: a fob battery running low, or a fob out of the car's range. | Swap in a new coin cell. Its size is printed on the old one. | Key fob not working |
| "Key Fob Not Detected" | Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler | Usually the fob battery. Owners of 2019 and newer Ram 1500s also report rear window leaks letting water reach the receiver module. | Press the start button with the nose of the fob, foot on the brake. | Car won't recognize key |
| Key light on, push-button car dead, wheel locked | Nissan Altima (2007 to 2012), Maxima and 370Z (2009 to 2012), Cube (2009 to 2011), Infiniti G35 and G37 | The electronic steering lock has failed, not the key. Nissan's campaign for it ended in 2020. | Do not force the wheel or keep pressing the button. Note whether the wheel is locked, and tell us on the phone. | Nissan steering lock |
| "Keyless Start System Problem" | Honda, Acura (2016 and 2017 Pilot most of all) | Usually the start button switch, which Honda covered under an extended warranty, bulletin A20-117, for 9 years or 125,000 miles. Sometimes just the fob battery. | Fit a new fob battery. If the message stays, ask a Honda dealer whether the switch coverage still applies to your VIN. | Car won't recognize key |
| Green key light flashing | Honda, Acura | The immobilizer is not reading the key's chip as one it knows. | Try the spare. A key with a cracked head may have lost its chip. | Spare key won't start car |
| "Keyless System Malfunction" | Mazda | Often follows a replacement fob, especially a used or aftermarket one, that the car only half accepted. | Fit a fresh fob battery, and note whether a fob was added recently, since that changes the fix. | Mazda keyless malfunction |
| "Take your key from ignition" or "Please remove key" | Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2008 to 2014), GLK (2010 to 2015) | The electronic steering lock has failed, and the ignition switch keeps the key from turning until it confirms the column is unlocked. | Check the car battery first, since a weak one gives a similar no-start. Do not keep forcing the key. | Mercedes key won't turn |
| "Steering column lock defective" | Volkswagen Passat (2006 to 2010), CC (2009 to 2012) | The electronic steering column lock has failed. It is not the lock housing that jams on Jettas of the same years. | Nothing to try at the car: it will not start until the lock is repaired. Call with the VIN for a quote. | Volkswagen ignition repair |
| "Immobilizer Active" | Volkswagen | The car did not recognize the key's chip and will not let the engine run. | Try the spare key. If neither works, charge or test the car battery, since a weak one can trigger it. | Car won't recognize key |
| "Bad Key" or "Damaged Key" | Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram with a fob key that slots into the dash | Either the fob key or the ignition node that reads it, called the WIN, which is also the ignition switch on these cars. | Try the second fob key. The same message on both points to the node; on 2008 to 2010 minivans and Journeys, check the VIN for recall 14V-373. | Dodge and Chrysler ignition |
| Theft light flashing fast, engine will not start | Ford | The car did not accept the chip in the key. | Let the key sit in Run a full 30 seconds, per Ford bulletin 01-06-02, and retry; after that, the spare. | Car won't recognize key |
| "Smart Key System Malfunction" or "Check Smart Key System" | Toyota, Lexus | A low fob battery, a weak car battery, or a stored fault that a dealer or locksmith has to read. | Fit a fresh fob battery. If the warning stays, note whether the car still starts before you call. | Car won't recognize key |
| "Key Battery Low" | Nissan, Toyota, Ford | The coin cell inside the fob is running down. | Replace the cell while the car still finds the fob. A parts store sells it, or we fit it at the car. | Fob battery replacement |
| "No Remote Detected" or "No Key Found" | Chevrolet Tahoe and Malibu, GMC Yukon and Sierra | The fob battery is low, or the fob sits outside the cabin where the car cannot hear it. | Set the fob in the console pocket marked for it, press the brake, then press start. | Car won't recognize key |

What does key not detected mean if the key is inside?
It means the car's antennas cannot hear the fob, usually because its coin cell is weak, sometimes because the fob is buried in a bag or radio noise drowns it out. Put the fob in contact with the start button, or with the fob backup location in the manual, and press start with the brake down. When that starts the engine, a new cell usually solves it.
Can I clear anti-theft mode myself, or does it cost money?
Often you can, at no cost. Many of these warnings clear if you wait them out: GM cars relearn the key after about 10 minutes in On, once the security light settles, and Ford's bulletin has the key rest 30 seconds in Run before a retry. Failing that, a tool relearn or reprogram costs $79 to $119 with us; dealers charge $120 to $200. Battery or wiring faults go to a mechanic.
Can a locksmith repair a worn ignition?
Yes. The worn or jammed lock is rebuilt or swapped where the car sits and matched to your present key. Ours is $179 to $349, and dealers usually come in at $350 to $700. The pages above name cars where the part is known to fail, such as Honda cylinders and Ford Escape lock housings. A key that turns normally while the engine will not crank is battery or starter work for a mechanic.
Which is better for a key problem, a locksmith or the dealership?
The dealer, when a recall or warranty extension makes the repair free; a locksmith at your car for most other key work. Put the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls first, and owners of turn-key Kias and Hyundais can ask about the free ignition protector. Otherwise the locksmith usually costs less, because there is no $125 to $200 tow and no waiting one to three days for an ordered key.
Is it always the key when a push-button car won't start?
No. A push-button car that refuses to start often has a weak 12-volt battery or a failed brake switch, and both are a mechanic's job. A fob problem usually puts a key warning on the dash, such as Key Not Detected. If the fob pressed against the button changes nothing and no key warning appears, call a mechanic first; we would say the same on the call.
