Recalls, and when the dealer is the right call
No recall or service bulletin for the Keyless System Malfunction warning turned up, and owner complaints filed with NHTSA hardly mention it. Even so, look the car up at nhtsa.gov/recalls with its VIN before paying anyone, since an open recall on any system gets repaired free by a franchised Mazda dealer.
The dealer is the better first call for a car still inside its factory warranty that has only the fobs it came with and keeps the warning after fresh cells and a charged battery. That points at the car's own keyless parts, which the warranty may cover. Once a used or aftermarket fob is involved, it is a key job.
When this warning is not a key job
Some of what sets this message off belongs elsewhere. A weak 12-volt battery, with dim dash lights or a slow crank, is for a battery shop or a mechanic, and the phone call settles that before any fob changes hands. A car showing the warning with only its original fobs, fresh cells and a healthy battery may need a dealer to diagnose its keyless parts.
When the Mazda refuses to start and reports key not detected, the general steps on car won't recognize key apply here too: try the spare fob, then the backup start method your owner's manual describes.
Where a dealer's Mazda fob bill comes from
The 2020 MX-5 row in the table shows a dealer quote built from separate lines: fob, module wipe, programming. Beyond the invoice, a Mazda that will not start reaches the service lane behind a tow truck billed at $125 to $200 in a typical case, and an out-of-stock fob can leave the Mazda waiting one to three days.
The gap is overhead. Nobody pays for a showroom floor here, fobs come direct from suppliers, and a single visit to your driveway or office lot covers cutting, erasing and programming. The $249 includes the drive, wherever in the county the car is parked.
Before you call: VIN, fobs and papers
Have the VIN and a count of your fobs, noting any added later and where each came from. That is also how we tell whether a new fob is needed at all.
At the car, bring along every fob that should keep working, because a fob missing when the list is cleared stops working until it is added back. Because this is not a copy of an existing key, state law has the locksmith note the details from your ID and the car's papers. Keep the Mazda's title or registration with you, and a matching photo ID.
