Mazda3 Key Replacement in San Diego

Mazda3s from 2014 on generally take a push-button fob, and ours is $249 programmed in your driveway, about half a Mazda dealer's $480. Flip keys for 2010 to 2013 cars cost $175.

The Mazda3 has run four generations in the US, and the key changed with them: a turned blade key on most cars through 2013, then a push-button smart key on every trim from 2014 on, going by trim listings.

Part of the dealer's number is the service department billing programming as labor, anywhere from $100 to $180, and a Mazda3 with no working key gets a $125 to $200 tow before anyone looks at it. Our fobs come direct from the supplier, the blade is cut on a machine in our van, and programming runs from the car's diagnostic socket at the curb. See how we keep the price down; the fob and its programming carry a one-year warranty.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2004 to 2009: Transponder chip keyFirst generation. Many came with a plain MAZ24 edge-cut key carrying a 4D63 chip, and the lock remote as a separate fob. Some later cars carry a flip key instead, the $175 job; your VIN settles which. $245 $135 $110
2010 to 2013: Remote head key (Flip key on most trims; a car with keyless start takes the $249 smart key)Second generation. The flip key has four buttons, trunk release included, with the blade folding into the head. We cut the blade, code the chip and link the buttons in one visit, then try the trunk button before we go. $320 $175 $145
2014 to 2018: Smart key for push-to-start (Start button standard on all trims by most listings; hands-free door unlocking only higher up the range)Third generation. Even the base car starts with a button, though its doors open from the fob's buttons. Many 2016 and newer cars hold the programmer in a timed security lockout for several minutes, which lengthens the visit, not the bill. $480 $249 $231
2019 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Start button standard across the range, per most listings)Fourth generation, sedan and hatchback. Mazda moved it to the fob family later used on the CX-30 and CX-50, so a 2014 to 2018 Mazda3 fob is not a substitute. Base trims unlock from the fob; higher trims open hands-free. $480 $249 $231

Lost every Mazda3 key?

No key at all is a VIN job on any Mazda3. For a 2004 to 2013 car we cut the blade to the key code and write the chip to the immobilizer over the OBD port: $195 for a plain chip key, $235 for a flip key.

A 2014 or newer car gets a new fob with its emergency blade cut, programmed after the security lockout where the car runs one, for $309.

Ownership has to be shown before we start: a title or registration card with your name on it, and an ID that matches. Once the replacement is running the engine, the missing one is erased from the immobilizer without charge, and a fob lost on the sand at Mission Beach becomes useless to whoever picks it up.

Mazda Mazda3 key questions

What does a replacement key for a 2014 or newer Mazda3 cost?

It is $249 at your car for the push-button fob, emergency blade cut and programming done. A Mazda service department usually lands near $480 for that fob once labor is added, before tax. If no key is left, the add is $60, making it $309. The price includes the drive, and the fob and programming carry a one-year warranty.

Will a fob from a 2016 Mazda3 work on a 2020 Mazda3?

No. The fourth-generation Mazda3 that arrived for 2019 uses a newer fob family than the 2014 to 2018 car, and one will not stand in for the other. The 2019 and newer car shares its family with the CX-30 and CX-50 instead. With the VIN in hand, we bring the matching fob, programmed at the car for $249.

My 2012 Mazda3 starts without turning a key. Which key does it need?

A smart key, $249 at the car. Some 2010 to 2013 Mazda3 trims came with keyless entry and start, while the rest kept the four-button flip key at $175. If you start the engine without putting a blade in a slot, your car has the fob system. Your VIN confirms it before we set out.

My older Mazda3 has a plain key and a separate remote. Do I need both replaced?

Only the part you lost. On a first-generation car set up this way, the chip key starts the engine and the remote only works the locks. A chip key is $135 at the car, against about $245 at a dealer. Pairing a remote you have in hand costs $79 to $119, and we quote a new remote when you call.

Should I add a spare Mazda3 fob while I still have one?

Yes, because the spare costs less than the rescue. A second fob for a 2014 or newer Mazda3 is $249 while a working key exists, programmed alongside yours. Once the last fob is gone, the same car costs $309, needs proof of ownership and sits until we arrive. The spare car key page covers the details.
