Ford Mustang Key Replacement in San Diego

A push-button Mustang fob for 2015 and newer cars is $239 programmed at the car, where a Ford service desk usually asks around $450. Chip keys for 1999 to 2014 Mustangs start at $129.

Mustangs built for 2015 and later start with a button, and the 1999 to 2014 cars all turn a key. The split is that clean, which makes this one of the easier Fords to quote before we arrive.

The inside of the key moved on, though: an early PATS chip through 2004, 40-bit to 2010, 80-bit for most cars from 2011 to 2014, then the Intelligent Access fob. We bring the part for your year and fit it in a Carlsbad garage or a beach lot in Oceanside, and cover it for a year. This page is about the gas coupe and convertible; the Mustang Mach-E is a separate model.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
1999 to 2004: Transponder chip keyThe New Edge Mustang uses a black-headed, edge-cut key carrying one of Ford's first PATS chips. The remote, where the car has one, is a separate unit. $240 $129 $111
2005 to 2010: Transponder chip keyThe retro-styled S197 kept that blade but switched to a 40-bit chip. The 2010 refresh put remote buttons into many key heads, and those keys are $169. $240 $129 $111
2011 to 2014: Transponder chip keyMost cars moved to the 80-bit chip in 2011, the year the GT got its new 5.0, so keys from a 2005 to 2010 car can turn this ignition without starting the engine. $240 $129 $111
2015 to 2023: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button start expected on every trim, EcoBoost through Shelby; the VIN confirms yours)The S550 made Intelligent Access standard. The emergency blade inside the fob is cut during the same visit, so a dead fob battery does not leave you locked out of the cabin. $450 $239 $211
2024 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button start expected on every trim, Dark Horse included)The seventh-generation car keeps the button start. Ford fobs are often specific to model and year, so we confirm the exact part by VIN before the visit. $450 $239 $211

Lost every Mustang key?

A Mustang with no keys gets new ones where it sits, no tow. Its VIN gives up the cut code, the van's machine shapes the blade, and programming runs through the diagnostic port.

Older cars, 1999 to 2010, often make the tool count down a security timer of roughly 10 minutes, and a number of them want two keys in memory before the engine will run, so both are quoted up front. On most 2011 and newer cars a coded exchange replaces the timer.

A 2015 and newer car gets its fob programmed for the immobilizer and the push-button start, with the emergency blade cut. The price is $60 above the regular key for your year. Show us the registration or title alongside a photo ID in your name; the lost keys then get wiped so they can no longer start the Mustang.

Ford Mustang key questions

Does every 2015 and newer Mustang use a push-button fob?

Expect it, yes. Ford made Intelligent Access with push-button start standard on the Mustang for 2015, from the EcoBoost and V6 cars through the GT, and the 2024 redesign kept it. We still confirm the fob by VIN. A replacement fob costs $239 in your driveway or lot, with its hidden door blade cut to match. A Ford dealer typically bills about $450 for the same fob.

My 2012 Mustang key has lock buttons on the head. Which price applies?

The $169 remote head key price. From the 2010 refresh, many Mustangs came with the remote built into the key instead of a separate fob, and that part costs more than a plain chip key. A plain head with a separate remote means the $129 chip key. On most 2011 to 2014 cars, either one needs the 80-bit chip.

I have both original keys for my 2003 Mustang. How does an owner add a third?

Through Ford's two-key routine, with a new key already cut on the correct chip blank. Turn original key one to On, back to Off, and pull it; within a few seconds repeat that with the second original; then turn the new key to On inside the window the manual gives. A key that starts the engine afterward has been learned. If it fails, our tool finishes the job at the car.

My used 2006 Mustang came with only one key. How urgent is a spare?

Urgent enough to handle soon. A second key made while one still works is $129. Lose the only one and the price becomes the key plus $60, and on many cars of this age the immobilizer then wants two keys programmed before it will start, so you may be buying two. A spare also keeps the two-key routine open for any future keys.
