Kia Optima and K5 Key Replacement in San Diego

Optima and K5 smart keys run $239, programmed in your parking spot; a Kia dealer usually charges about $470. LX flip keys are $169.

Kia sold its midsize sedan as the Optima through 2020 and renamed it K5 for 2021. From 2011 on, under both names, the LX mostly keeps a turned ignition and the better-equipped trims use push-button start.

The LX is where the extra question sits. Many turn-key Optimas and early K5 LX cars from roughly 2011 to 2021 were assembled without an immobilizer, and the flip key on those cars has no transponder, so the visit is cutting and pairing. Push-button cars always have one. A VIN lookup before we quote tells us which job yours is. For the rest of the lineup, see the Kia page.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2010: Transponder chip keyThe first two Optima generations. A plain-head key cut along the edge; many hold a chip that is programmed after cutting. Some late keys use a side-milled blade instead, which the VIN code reveals. $240 $129 $111
2011 to 2015: Smart key for push-to-start (EX, SX and Hybrid came with the smart key; the LX turned a flip key)The third generation. Tucked in the fob is an emergency key, which we cut by VIN code; some keys from these years use a side-milled profile. Many LX flip keys have no chip, since those cars often lack an immobilizer. $470 $239 $231
2016 to 2020: Remote head key (LX with a flip key; EX and SX with push-button start, by most listings)The fourth generation. Many of these flip keys carry no chip, which leaves code cutting and remote pairing as the whole job. Side-milled blades turn up on some keys through 2017. $310 $169 $141
2021 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (LXS and above; the LX turned a flip key)Renamed K5. The fob conceals a slim emergency key, cut as part of the job. An LX from the first model years may lack an immobilizer, and the VIN settles it. $470 $239 $231

Lost every Optima and K5 key?

Every key gone is still a curbside job on this car. A push-button Optima or K5 gets a new fob added to its immobilizer and the emergency key cut: $239 for the fob and $60 for the lost-key work, $299 in all. A turn-key LX without an immobilizer needs only a blade cut by code with its remote paired, $229.

Before anything is cut, we confirm ownership from your papers and a photo ID. With the same $60 added, a 2001 to 2010 chip key comes to $189 and a side-milled key to $209. You hear the full price on the call, with the drive already counted.

Afterward we tidy up the car's key list where it has one: a push-button Optima or K5 forgets the lost fob, which we remove from its memory free of charge. A turn-key LX built without an immobilizer keeps no list, so the old blade still turns it, and the way to retire it is a new ignition cylinder, which we price on the same call.

Kia Optima and K5 key questions

Is a 2021 K5 key the same as a 2020 Optima key?

Not as a rule. The K5 took over for 2021, and the trim split moved with it: LXS and higher came with push-button start, while the Optima gave it to the EX and SX. Both smart keys are $239 at the car, and we match yours by VIN rather than by the look of the fob, since similar shells can be coded differently.

Does my 2018 Optima LX flip key have a chip?

Often it does not. A lot of Optima flip keys from 2016 through 2020 hold no chip, because the LX was often built without an immobilizer. Then we just cut and pair it, $169. If the VIN shows a chip, it gets programmed during the same visit for the same price, so your phone quote holds either way.

Which Optima keys use a side-milled blade?

Some Optima keys from about 2010 to 2017 use a high-security blade whose cuts run as a groove down its face, with smooth edges. A milling cutter handles it, the tool most hardware counters lack, and it is priced as a laser-cut key, $149. Which Optimas carry it is best read from the VIN key code, so we check before we drive.

What will a K5 smart key cost at a Kia dealer instead?

Usually about $470, of which $100 to $180 is programming labor, plus a tow when every key is lost. Ours is $239 at the car, or $299 with no key left. Your new fob will be OEM or OEM-grade, chip matched, set up by the same procedure a Kia service lane uses, and warranted for a year.

Can you program a K5 fob I bought online?

Yes, if it matches your K5 and was never paired to another car. Programming a customer-supplied fob runs $79 to $119 here, while dealers charge $120 to $200 for it, and our warranty covers the programming. Before you order, send the part number by text, and we check the fit against your VIN.
