Kia Soul Key Replacement in San Diego

A Soul flip key is $169 at your car; Kia dealers typically charge about $310 for it. Push-button Souls take a $239 smart key instead.

The Soul came to the US as a 2010 model and ran through three generations, and its key changed with each one. A 2016 Soul and a 2021 Soul look like cousins, but they do not take the same blade.

Like other turn-key Kias of that era, many Souls from roughly 2011 to 2021 left Kia's plant with no immobilizer at all, which means the blade does the starting and there may be no chip to program. The push-button trims are the exception, since a smart key always talks to one. Before we quote, the VIN shows which Soul you own, and the price you hear covers the key, the cutting, any programming and the drive.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2010 to 2013: Remote head keyThe first Soul, usually with a flip key whose head carries the lock and unlock buttons. Some have a chip and some do not, so we check the VIN before loading the van. $310 $169 $141
2014 to 2019: High-security laser-cut key (The base Soul turns this key; push-button cars, offered on the Plus and Exclaim, take the $239 smart key)The second-generation Soul moved to a groove-cut, high-security blade that a key counter's edge cutter cannot reproduce. It is $149 here and about $280 at a Kia dealer. $280 $149 $131
2020 to 2025: Remote head key (LX and other turn-key trims; push-button cars in the upper trims take the $239 smart key)The third-generation Soul. Turn-key trims use a flip key, and whether a given car has an immobilizer varies, so the VIN decides between a cut-and-pair job and a full programming job. $310 $169 $141

Lost every Soul key?

When the last Soul key is gone, we look up the cut code by VIN, a fresh blade comes off the van's machine, and we pair the remote, adding chip programming on a car fitted with an immobilizer.

Each price rises by $60: a flip key becomes $229, a 2014 to 2019 laser-cut key $209 and a smart key $299. Before any cutting, we compare your registration or title with your photo ID.

If your Soul has no immobilizer, an old key that resurfaces still fits the ignition and starts the car. We say so plainly and offer to swap the ignition cylinder for one that answers only to the new blade, $179 to $349, while we are already there. Push-button Souls are simpler: the missing fob is deleted from the car's memory free, and it goes dead to that Soul.

Kia Soul key questions

Can a key counter copy my 2017 Soul key?

No, not with a standard machine. The 2014 to 2019 Soul uses a high-security blade with its pattern milled into the face, and most key counters only have edge cutters. We cut it on a milling cutter in the van, from your key or from the VIN code. The key costs $149 at your curb, and Kia service departments tend to charge around $280.

My Soul is a turn-key LX. Does the flip key need a chip?

Often not. Kia built many turn-key Souls from roughly 2011 to 2021 with no immobilizer. On those cars the flip key's job is to turn the ignition and work the doors, and pairing its remote is the programming step. Some Souls do have the chip. Your VIN answers that before we drive, and the flip key starts at $169 either way.

What does a smart key cost for a push-button Soul Exclaim?

It is $239 at the car. That buys the fob, its programming to the immobilizer and a cut emergency blade. Kia dealers commonly bill around $470 for that fob with its programming line. If every fob is lost, the price is $299, and the Soul stays where it is parked instead of riding a $125 to $200 tow.

My Soul had Kia's anti-theft update. Does a new remote need anything extra?

It needs to be paired properly, which we do on every flip key anyway. Kia describes the update as tying the ignition to the remote: lock with the remote and the engine stays off, unlock with it and it starts. That makes the pairing matter more than before, so we run lock, unlock and start tests with you watching.

I bought a flip key for my Soul online. Can you program it?

Usually, provided the remote is new and fits your Soul's part number. Pairing a remote you supply costs $79 to $119; dealers ask $120 to $200 for that labor. A remote that was paired to another car often will not take a second pairing, so text us the part number and we check it before driving out.
