Kia Sorento Key Replacement in San Diego

A Sorento smart key is $239 at the car, where a Kia dealer typically quotes about $470. Turn-key LX Sorentos take a $169 flip key instead.

Kia has sold four generations of Sorento here, starting with the 2003 model, and nearly every redesign changed the key. Your model year, and whether you turn a key or press a button, tells us most of what we need.

The Sorento detail that changes the job most is the immobilizer. Many turn-key Sorentos from roughly 2011 to 2021 left the factory without one, so the cut blade by itself fires the engine and the flip key only needs its remote paired. Push-button Sorentos always have one. We read your VIN before quoting, and the price covers cutting, programming where the car needs it, and the drive to wherever the Sorento is parked.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2003 to 2009: Transponder chip keyThe first-generation, body-on-frame Sorento. Kia fitted a chip on some of these SUVs and not on others, so the VIN decides whether you need the $129 chip key. Without a chip it is a plain cut key. $240 $129 $111
2011 to 2015: Remote head key (LX and other turn-key cars use the flip key; push-button cars, mostly EX and SX, take the $239 smart key)There is no 2010 Sorento; this generation arrived as a 2011. The flip key carries the remote in its head. Many of these cars were built with no immobilizer, which leaves nothing to program but the remote. $310 $169 $141
2016 to 2020: High-security laser-cut key (L, LX and other turn-key cars; push-button EX, SX and SXL cars take the $239 smart key)The 2016 to 2019 turn-key key cuts on the HY18R high-security blank, shared with the 2013 to 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, and only a milling cutter can reproduce it. A 2020 we confirm by VIN before cutting. $280 $149 $131
2021 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button trims; turn-key LX cars take the $169 flip key)The fourth-generation Sorento, hybrid and plug-in hybrid included. Its fob carries a slim backup blade that opens the driver's lock, and cutting it is included. $470 $239 $231

Lost every Sorento key?

With no Sorento key left, we cut a new blade from the key code stored against your VIN, then program it when the car carries an immobilizer or uses a smart key. On push-button Sorentos we remove the lost fob from the immobilizer's memory free, before leaving your driveway.

Having no key at all adds $60: a flip key comes to $229, the 2016 to 2020 laser-cut key to $209, a smart key to $299 and a 2003 to 2009 chip key to $189. Ownership comes first: the registration or title, and a photo ID showing the same owner.

On a turn-key Sorento built without an immobilizer, a lost key that turns up would still start the car, because there is no chip list to strike it from. What actually shuts it out is a replacement cylinder that turns only for the new blade. That work runs $179 to $349 and happens during the same trip, and our ignition repair page covers it.

Kia Sorento key questions

Which Sorento years take the HY18R laser-cut key?

The 2016 to 2019 Sorento does, on its turn-key key, and we confirm a 2020 by VIN. It is the same high-security blank the 2013 to 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe uses. The groove is milled into the face of the blade, so a hardware store cannot cut it. Our price is $149 at the car; Kia dealers typically quote about $280.

My 2014 Sorento LX starts with a copied key. Is that normal?

Yes, on many turn-key Sorentos from roughly 2011 to 2021. Kia built a lot of them without an immobilizer, so any correctly cut blade turns the engine over. That is why a copy works on your LX and would not on a push-button Sorento. It is also why Kia has offered an anti-theft software update at its dealers for eligible cars.

Why does the price for my 2012 Sorento depend on the VIN?

Because the same year can go two ways. A turn-key 2012 usually needs a cut flip key plus remote pairing, $169. A push-button 2012 needs the $239 smart key, paired to the immobilizer. The VIN tells us which car you have before we drive, so the phone quote already names the right key.

Can you add a spare fob to a 2022 Sorento SX while one still works?

Yes, and it is the easier job. A second fob is $239, which covers programming, cutting its emergency blade and the drive. A Kia dealer usually lands near $470 once the fob and a separate programming charge are added. Programming happens in your driveway, and you pay once lock, unlock and push-button start all work.

Does a 2003 to 2009 Sorento key need programming?

Only if the car has a chip. Kia put an immobilizer on some first-generation Sorentos and not on others. With a chip, the key is $129 and is programmed at the car. Without one, it is a plain cut key in the $49 to $89 range, and the dealer price is close to that, so the gain is not having to get the car there.
