Kia Forte Key Replacement in San Diego

Forte flip keys cost $169 at your curb against about $310 at a Kia dealer, and push-button Fortes take a $239 smart key.

Kia sold the Forte from 2010 through 2024, after which the K4 took its place. Across three generations the base trims kept a turned ignition and a flip key, while the better-equipped ones offered push-button start.

That base-trim flip key comes with a wrinkle. Kia built a large number of Fortes between about 2011 and 2021 with no immobilizer at all, so the key has no chip to program. Our cutter follows the key code tied to your VIN, then the remote gets paired. Turn-key Fortes built after that window should have one, and the VIN confirms it. Other Kia models are on the Kia page.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2010 to 2013: Remote head keyThe first generation: sedan, Koup and five-door. Many 2011 to 2013 cars have no immobilizer, so their key holds no chip; a 2010 is more likely to carry one. The VIN decides what we program. $310 $169 $141
2014 to 2018: Remote head key (LX and most EX cars turn a flip key; the SX and some packaged EX cars start with a button, going by trim listings)The second generation. Chipless flip keys are common here, so the job is a code-cut blade with its buttons paired to the doors. $310 $169 $141
2019 to 2021: Remote head key (FE and LXS turn a key; EX and GT use a fob and start button, per trim listings)The third generation's early years. Plenty of turn-key cars in this stretch still have no immobilizer; the VIN shows which before we price the key. $310 $169 $141
2022 to 2024: Smart key for push-to-start (EX and GT by most listings; FE and LXS turn a flip key that should now carry a chip)The last Forte years. The fob hides an emergency blade that gets cut to code. Turn-key cars from here on should have an immobilizer, meaning the flip key gets programmed as well as cut. $470 $239 $231

Lost every Forte key?

With no Forte key left, the price follows the ignition. For a turn-key Forte lacking an immobilizer, it is a new VIN-coded blade plus a paired remote, $229 with the lost-key add included. A push-button Forte, or a turn-key car that has a chip, needs the immobilizer taught a new key from zero: $299 with a smart key, $229 with a chipped flip key.

Papers come first, and the ID you show must match your title or registration. Push-button Fortes then drop the lost fob from memory at no charge.

One honest limit up front: a turn-key Forte without an immobilizer has no list of approved keys, so the lost blade still turns the ignition after we leave. If that matters to you, a replacement ignition cylinder matched to the new key costs $179 to $349, and we price it with the key on the same call.

Kia Forte key questions

Does a 2017 Forte LX key need programming?

Often it does not. Plenty of LX-trim Fortes built in roughly the 2011 to 2021 span lack an immobilizer, so the flip key has no chip and only its buttons need pairing. Your VIN tells us for certain before we quote. Either way the flip key costs $169, remote included, and that same price covers programming a chip if the VIN shows one.

Which Forte trims have push-button start?

Upper trims, by most listings: the SX and some packaged EX cars from 2014 to 2018, and the EX and GT from 2019 on. The FE, LX and LXS turn a flip key. A Forte smart key costs $239 here, against roughly $470 at a Kia dealer, and the fob's hidden emergency blade is cut too.

Is the Forte blade laser-cut?

Not on the rows we price. Kia's side-milled blades show up on some Optima, Rio, Soul and Sorento keys, while Forte keys sit on our flip key and smart key rows. Your VIN's key code pins down the profile before we cut, and both edge-cut and milled blades are cut at the car.

I bought a used Forte with one key. What does a spare cost?

A spare flip key is $169 and a spare smart key $239, made at the car. Doing it while one key still works keeps the $60 lost-key add off the bill, and it spares you a $125 to $200 dealer tow if the last key ever disappears. More on how that visit works is on the spare key page.
