Hyundai Santa Fe Key Replacement in San Diego

Santa Fe smart keys cost $239 in your driveway versus roughly $470 at a Hyundai dealer. The milled HY18R key on 2013 to 2019 turn-key models is $149.

The Santa Fe is the Hyundai with the unusual blade. From 2013 to 2019 its key uses the HY18R profile, a track milled into the face instead of teeth on the edge, which a hardware counter cannot cut. Older ones use a plain chip key.

The 2013 redesign also split the lineup by trim. GLS and base Santa Fe Sport models turned a key, while Limited trims got push-button start with a fob. Hyundai built many turn-key cars from roughly 2011 to 2021 without an immobilizer, Santa Fes from that redesign on among them, and for those the job is milling the blade and pairing the remote. A VIN check on the call sorts out which you have, and the Hyundai page covers the other models.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2012: Transponder chip keyThe first two generations. A plain-head key, toothed along its edge, often with a transponder inside that must be recognized before the engine starts. Cutting and chip programming both happen at the car. $240 $129 $111
2013 to 2018: High-security laser-cut key (GLS and base Santa Fe Sport cars turn this key; Limited trims carry a smart key with the same blade inside)The HY18R side-milled blade, cut by code on a milling cutter. Many turn-key cars from these years have no immobilizer, so no chip needs programming. Limited smart keys tuck this same blade inside as the emergency key. $280 $149 $131
2019 to 2023: Smart key for push-to-start (Limited and Ultimate by most listings; lower trims often turn a $169 flip key)The fourth generation, plus the 2019 Santa Fe XL on the older body. Some 2019 keys still use the HY18R blade, which the VIN code shows. Turn-key cars built before November 2021 may lack an immobilizer. $470 $239 $231
2024 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Start button standard across the lineup, per most listings)The boxy fifth generation. The fob gets programmed in your driveway and its emergency blade cut to your VIN code. Hyundai dealers quote near $470; ours is $239. $470 $239 $231

Lost every Santa Fe key?

With every Santa Fe key gone, the blade is the step to get right. On a 2013 to 2019 car the HY18R profile is milled from the VIN key code in the van, not traced from anything, so it matches the factory locks.

A turn-key Santa Fe lacking an immobilizer then starts on that blade; a Limited or any chip car gets programmed as well. With the $60 added, totals run $209 for the HY18R key, $229 for a flip key, $299 for a smart key and $189 for a 2001 to 2012 chip key. Your ownership papers must match your ID.

The dealer version starts with towing, $125 to $200, because a keyless Santa Fe cannot drive itself to the service lane, and a milled blade or fob on back order stretches it by one to three days. Our quote comes over the phone, drive included. On a push-button Santa Fe, we clear the missing fob out of the car's key memory before we leave, free.

Hyundai Santa Fe key questions

What does a side-milled Santa Fe key look like?

Look at the blade. A side-milled key has smooth edges, with a narrow track wandering along its flat face instead of teeth. On the Santa Fe that is the HY18R profile from 2013 to 2019, also found as the emergency blade in the 2013 to 2018 smart key. A hardware counter usually sends it away. Ours is $149, cut at the car.

Which Santa Fe trims have push-button start?

On the 2013 to 2018 models, the Limited trims had the smart key while the GLS and base Sport turned a key. The 2019 to 2023 Santa Fe gave it to the Limited and Ultimate, per most listings, while the 2024 redesign made it standard across most or all trims. A Santa Fe smart key is $239 here, emergency blade included.

Does my 2016 Santa Fe Sport have an immobilizer?

If it starts with a button, yes. If it turns a key, it may not: many turn-key Santa Fe models from the 2013 redesign through about 2021 were built without one. That decides whether we program a chip or only mill the blade and pair the remote. The VIN, given to us on the phone, answers it before we quote.

Can you replace the key for a 2024 Santa Fe?

Yes. The fifth-generation Santa Fe uses a smart key with a slim emergency blade tucked inside; we program the fob on site and cut the blade to your VIN code. It is $239 with a working key and $299 with none, against roughly $470 from a Hyundai dealer. We confirm the correct fob for your VIN before we drive.

My 2011 Santa Fe key is hard to turn. What should be replaced?

Start with the key. A copy made from a worn key copies the wear, so the new one is cut from the factory code tied to your VIN, $129 with the chip programmed where the car has one. If a fresh key still sticks, the cylinder is worn: a new ignition cylinder is $179 to $349, against the $350 to $700 a dealer typically charges. Both get checked in one visit.
