Hyundai Sonata Key Replacement in San Diego

A Sonata smart key runs $239 at your curb, about half the $470 a Hyundai dealer typically asks. Turn-key Sonatas take a $169 flip key.

Sonata keys changed with each generation. Cars before 2011 carry a plain chip key; the 2011 to 2019 cars split between flip keys and smart keys by trim, and push-button start became the norm from 2020, going by most listings.

The trim split matters for more than the price. Many turn-key Hyundais from roughly 2011 to 2021 never got an immobilizer at the factory, plenty of 2011 to 2019 GLS and SE Sonatas among them, which means their flip key has no transponder and the work is cutting and pairing rather than programming. Push-button Sonatas always have one. A quick VIN check on the call settles it, and the smart key page walks through how a fob gets programmed.

1999 to 2010: Transponder chip keyThe EF and NF generations. A plain head over a blade with teeth on the edge, and many carry a transponder that gets programmed once the blade is cut. It is $129 while one key still works. $240 $129 $111
2011 to 2014: Smart key for push-to-start (SE and Limited; the GLS turned a flip key)The YF generation. The fob holds an emergency blade, cut from the VIN code in whatever profile the car calls for. GLS flip keys often carry no chip, since many of those cars lack an immobilizer. $470 $239 $231
2015 to 2019: Remote head key (SE turns a flip key; Sport, Limited and turbo trims start with a button, per most listings)The LF generation. Many 2015 to 2017 flip keys have no transponder, and later turn-key cars often follow suit, so the visit is a code-cut blade plus a paired remote. $310 $169 $141
2020 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button start on most or all trims, per most listings)The current body. Every push-button Sonata has an immobilizer, so the fob is programmed on site and its hidden blade cut to code. $470 $239 $231

Lost every Sonata key?

Losing every key to a Sonata splits by generation. A 2011 to 2019 GLS or SE with a turned ignition and no immobilizer gets a blade cut by VIN code and a new remote paired, $229 in total.

A push-button Sonata, or any Sonata with a chip, has its immobilizer set up from scratch at the curb: $299 for the smart key, $229 for a chipped flip key, $189 for a 1999 to 2010 chip key. Ownership papers and a photo ID are checked first.

Afterward, a push-button Sonata forgets the missing fob, which we delete from its memory at no charge. A turn-key car without an immobilizer keeps no such list, so the lost blade would still turn it. If that matters to you, replacing the ignition cylinder, $179 to $349, retires it, and we quote that on the same call.

Hyundai Sonata key questions

Which Sonata trims have push-button start?

It changed three times. From 2011 to 2014 the fob went to the SE and Limited while the GLS turned a flip key. From 2015 to 2019 the Sport, Limited and turbo cars had it, going by most listings, and the SE kept a key. The 2020 redesign made push-button start the norm. Sonata smart keys are $239 here.

Is my 2016 Sonata SE flip key missing a chip?

Quite possibly. A good share of Sonata flip keys from 2015 to 2017 carry no transponder, because those cars came off the line with no immobilizer. That keeps the job simple: your blade gets cut to the VIN code and the remote paired, $169 with a working key. The VIN, read to us on the call, confirms it before any quote, so nothing about the job is a guess.

Is there a metal blade inside a 2012 Sonata smart key?

Yes. A release on the fob lets a slim emergency key slide out, for the driver door lock when the fob battery is flat. We cut it to your VIN code as part of the $239 job so it matches your lock. Whether that blade is edge-cut or side-milled comes from the same code, and either one is cut at the car.

How does a Sonata fob from you compare with the dealer bill?

Ours is $239 at your car. A dealer bill lands near $470, and programming labor makes up $100 to $180 of that. A dealer-ordered fob means one to three extra days; a Sonata with no key left also needs towing in first, $125 to $200. We use an OEM or OEM-grade fob with the same chip. A written dealer figure can be sent to us to compare.

How much is a 2008 Sonata key?

A 2008 Sonata takes a plain-head key, and many from those years carry a chip, so it is $129 at the car, or $189 when none is left. The blade gets cut and the transponder programmed using the procedure a Hyundai service lane follows, under the same one-year warranty as a smart key. A Hyundai dealer typically quotes about $240.
