Hyundai Elantra Key Replacement in San Diego

An Elantra flip key costs $169 on the spot, and a smart key for button-start trims is $239. Hyundai dealers usually land near $310 and $470.

From 2001 on, the Elantra has used a plain chip key, a flip key and a smart key. After 2010 the badge on the trunk lid often decides between the last two, so an SE and a Limited from one year can need different keys.

Many turn-key Elantras from roughly 2011 to 2021 left the factory with no immobilizer at all. On those cars the flip key holds no chip, so the blade gets cut by VIN key code and the remote is paired. Hyundai has said cars built from November 2021 on all have one, and a VIN lookup on the phone shows which kind yours is. Other models are on the Hyundai page.

2001 to 2010: Transponder chip keyThe XD and HD generations. A plain plastic head with teeth along the blade edge, and in many cars a transponder in that head that has to be programmed before the engine will run. $240 $129 $111
2011 to 2016: Remote head key (Most trims turn a key; push-button start came only with some upper-trim packages, by most listings)The fifth generation brought the folding flip key. Many of these cars have no immobilizer, so the job is a blade cut by code and a remote synced to the locks. $310 $169 $141
2017 to 2020: Remote head key (SE on a flip key; Value Edition, Sport and Limited on a smart key, by most listings)The sixth generation keeps the same flip key routine for the SE, and many of those cars still lack an immobilizer. The push-button trims do have one, and their smart key is $239. $310 $169 $141
2021 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Limited, N Line and N, plus SEL cars with the Convenience package, by most listings; the SE turns a flip key)The seventh generation. The fob hides a slim emergency blade that we cut too. An SE built before November 2021 may have no immobilizer; later SE flip keys carry a chip that we program. $470 $239 $231

Lost every Elantra key?

What the job involves depends on the ignition. On a turn-key Elantra built without an immobilizer, we cut a blade to the VIN code and pair a new remote: $229, the flip key price with $60 added because nothing is left to copy.

On a push-button Elantra, or any Elantra with a chip, the immobilizer is programmed from scratch too. With the same $60 added, a smart key comes to $299, a chipped flip key to $229 and a 2001 to 2010 chip key to $189. Ownership gets checked before the cutter runs: the name on the title or registration has to match your ID.

The missing key is handled differently too. A chip or smart key comes out of the immobilizer's memory before we leave and will not start the car afterward. A plain turn-key Elantra has nothing to erase, since the ignition only reads the cut, so if you want the old blade retired we price a new ignition cylinder, $179 to $349, on the same call.

Hyundai Elantra key questions

Does my Elantra key have a chip in it?

Year and ignition type decide it. Many Elantras before 2011 have a chip, every push-button Elantra has an immobilizer, and many turn-key cars from about 2011 through 2021 lack one. Hyundai states that its builds from November 2021 onward include one. Send us the VIN and we answer before quoting, because it changes what the job involves.

Why do two Elantras from the same year take different keys?

Hyundai split the Elantra by trim for most of the last fifteen years. A 2019 SE turns a flip key, while the Sport and Limited from that year start with a button and a smart key, going by most trim listings. The flip key is $169 at the car and the smart key $239, so read us the badge on the trunk lid when you call.

Will a hardware store copy of my Elantra key start the car?

Only on some Elantras. If yours has an immobilizer, a copy lacking a programmed chip turns the lock cylinder, but the immobilizer keeps the engine from starting. On a turn-key car built without one, a well-cut copy can start it, though it has no remote. We cut to the factory code from your VIN rather than tracing a worn key, so the new blade does not copy old wear.

Will you program a 2023 Elantra smart key in my apartment garage?

Yes, in the parking space or garage where it sits. The seventh-generation fob is programmed through the diagnostic port, and its emergency blade gets cut to your VIN code in the van. It is $239 with one key still working and $299 with none. A Hyundai service department usually quotes near $470 for the same fob and needs the car brought in.

Is an Elantra blade laser-cut like a Santa Fe key?

Not on our price table. The side-milled HY18R blade we price as a laser-cut key belongs to Santa Fe keys from 2013 through 2019. Elantra keys are priced as flip keys or smart keys, and the exact profile for your car, edge-cut or milled, comes from your VIN key code. Either profile is cut at the car in the same visit.
