GMC Sierra Key Replacement in San Diego

A turn-key 2007 to 2018 Sierra takes a $125 chip key and a push-start Sierra a $229 fob, both programmed at the truck. GMC dealers tend to charge near $230 and $440.

Sierra keys track the truck's generations: mostly chipless through 2006, a Circle Plus chip key for 2007 to 2013, a newer edge-cut blank from 2014, and a pocket fob on push-start trucks of the body that arrived for 2019.

Most 1999 to 2006 Sierras, like the 2007 Sierra Classic, carry no chip in the key; where GM Passlock is fitted, the theft sensor lives in the ignition cylinder. A copy cut to code runs $49 to $89. Mechanically, a Sierra key matches the Chevy Silverado key of the same year; only the badge differs. Whatever year you drive, the key we fit is OEM or OEM-grade, set up by GM's method at the truck and warrantied for one year.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2007 to 2013: Transponder chip keyCircle Plus chip key, with a remote fob riding separately on the ring. The 2007 Sierra Classic is the old truck with the chipless key, and the 2014 2500HD and 3500HD, which kept the previous body that year, probably stayed on Circle Plus. $230 $125 $105
2014 to 2018: Transponder chip keyAn updated edge-cut blank and chip; locking still happens from a separate fob. The 2019 Sierra 1500 Limited, the outgoing body sold that year, likely uses it, as do most heavy-duty trucks from 2015 through 2019. $230 $125 $105
2019 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Most Denali trucks and others ordered with push-button start; turn-key work trims use a different key, quoted by VIN)Denali fobs usually carry remote start, plus a tailgate button on trucks with the power tailgate. An emergency blade inside the fob gets you through the driver's door when its battery dies. $440 $229 $211

Lost every Sierra key?

No key left for a 2007 to 2013 Sierra usually means GM's relearn: with the fresh key turned to on, the security light stays lit for around ten minutes, then off, three times over. Cutting the blade from the VIN code comes first, and the timers add about half an hour on top. Newer Sierras learn keys through the OBD port, where GM's security timer can still add a wait.

A lost-key job adds $60 to whichever key the truck needs: $125 plus $60 for a 2016 Sierra, $229 plus $60 for a push-start 2022. Bring a license bearing the owner's name and the title or registration. The truck never leaves the yard, and the key that went missing gets locked out of the Sierra at no extra cost.

GMC Sierra key questions

What key does a 2021 Sierra Denali use?

Nearly always a push-button smart key, $229 programmed at the truck. Denali fobs typically add remote start and, on trucks with a power tailgate, a tailgate button. A GMC dealer usually ends up near $440 after adding programming labor, and a fob on order can idle the truck for one to three days.

Is a 2500HD key different from a 1500 key of the same year?

Sometimes, because the heavy-duty trucks changed body a year later. A 2014 Sierra 2500HD most likely still uses the Circle Plus key while a 2014 Sierra 1500 moved to the newer blank, and the same one-year lag shows up again in 2019. We confirm by VIN and bring the right key: $125 for either chip key, $229 for a push-start fob.

My older Sierra key is worn and sticks in the ignition. Can you cut a fresh one?

Yes. On a 1999 to 2006 Sierra, a key cut fresh from the factory code often turns more smoothly than a copy of a worn key. It is $49 to $89, and on the usual chipless truck no programming is involved. When the wear is in the cylinder instead, a fresh key does not solve that, and ignition repair, priced $179 to $349, is the real remedy.

Can I bring my own Sierra fob for you to program?

Yes, provided it is unused or has never been paired, and it matches your truck. Check the FCC ID against your original first, since GM's truck remotes and truck smart keys can look the same in listing photos while being different parts. A matching fob gets paired at the truck for $79 to $119. When it does not match, a fob from us is $229 with programming included.

What should I do first if my Sierra key is lost on a job site?

Check the cab, the toolboxes and the last place you set things down, and keep the registration handy. Then call with the VIN, which shows through the windshield on the driver's side. We quote on the phone with the $60 lost-key charge included, drive out any day from 7 AM until 9 PM, and cut and program the new key where the truck sits.
