Chevrolet Silverado Key Replacement in San Diego

A chip key for a 2007 to 2018 Silverado is $125 at the truck, and newer push-start trucks take a $229 fob. The Chevrolet service counter usually asks around $230 and $440.

Silverado keys come in four styles from the 1999 truck to today, and the model year plus the trim decide which one your pickup takes. Read us the VIN when you call and the matching blank, chip or fob rides out in the van.

Most trucks from 1999 to 2006, plus the 2007 Classic built on the older body, run a plain metal key with no chip; where GM Passlock is fitted, it watches the ignition cylinder instead. Cutting one from the code costs $49 to $89, with nothing to program. Later trucks get OEM or OEM-grade keys carrying GM's chip, programmed the way the dealer does it, under our one-year warranty. The GMC page covers the Sierra twin.

2007 to 2013: Transponder chip keyA Circle Plus chip key, stamped with a circle and plus sign; the door buttons sit on a separate remote. The 2007 Classic is the older truck with the chipless key. The 2014 HD trucks, still on the older body, most likely kept Circle Plus. $230 $125 $105
2014 to 2018: Transponder chip keyA newer edge-cut blank with an updated chip, still paired with its own remote. The 2019 Silverado LD, the carryover truck sold beside the redesign, likely uses it too, as do most 2015 to 2019 heavy-duty trucks. $230 $125 $105
2019 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button trucks, mostly upper 1500 trims such as LTZ and High Country; turn-key trucks take a different key, priced by VIN)The fob stays in your pocket and hides a steel blade for the driver's lock. Many carry a remote start button, and trucks with a power tailgate add a tailgate button. $440 $229 $211

Lost every Silverado key?

With no Silverado key left, we mill the blade from the VIN's key code, and the work happens where the truck is parked. On many 2007 to 2013 trucks, GM's relearn then runs three rounds of about ten minutes each, key in the ignition and the security light on, so count on half an hour of waiting.

Later trucks program through the OBD port, where some add a GM security timer.

Lost-key work puts $60 on the key price, so a 2012 truck comes to $125 plus $60 and a push-start 2021 to $229 plus $60. Proof of ownership means the truck's registration or title plus the owner's driver's license. Chip-key trucks get the missing key wiped free of charge after the new one starts. A chipless 1999 to 2006 Silverado just needs a fresh key cut to code.

Chevrolet Silverado key questions

Does a 2005 Silverado key need programming?

Usually not. Most 1999 to 2006 Silverados use a chipless key; on trucks with GM Passlock, the theft sensor sits in the ignition cylinder instead. A new one runs $49 to $89, cut to the factory code, and it starts the truck with no programming. If it cranks without firing while the security lamp glows, suspect the cylinder or its sensor, not the key.

Which Silverado trims have push-button start?

On the 2019 and newer truck, mainly the upper 1500 trims such as LTZ and High Country, plus trucks optioned with it. Look at the dash: a start button means the $229 smart key, while a keyed ignition marks a turn-key truck, which takes a different key we price from the VIN.

Will a key from a 2016 Silverado start my 2012 Silverado?

Almost certainly not. The 2014 truck moved to a newer blank and chip, so keys from the 2007 to 2013 trucks and the 2014 to 2018 trucks do not trade places in either direction. Give us the model year, and say if it is a 1500 or a heavy-duty, because the 2500 and 3500 appear to have changed a year later. Either chip key costs $125 with programming, done beside the truck.

Can you make a Silverado key at a job site?

Yes. We cut and program the key wherever the truck sits, whether that is a yard in Otay Mesa or your driveway, from 7 AM through 9 PM on any day. The quote comes from the VIN before we leave, with our drive already counted in. Card or cash is taken only after the truck fires up on its new key.

My Silverado remote quit, yet the key still starts the truck. What do I need?

Usually just the remote, not a new key. On a 2007 to 2018 truck the key and the remote are separate parts, so a dead remote leaves the chip key working. Put a fresh coin cell in first. If the doors still ignore it, we pair a new or never-used remote for $79 to $119 through fob programming and leave the key alone.

Why does the dealer want my Silverado towed in when the only key is lost?

Because the dealer programs keys in its own service bay, and a truck with no key cannot drive there. The tow bill lands at $125 to $200, and ordering the key can mean another one to three days. We cut the blade in our van and program the key in the parking spot, so the truck stays put until you drive it away.
