Chevrolet Malibu Key Replacement in San Diego

Malibus from 2016 on take a $229 push-start fob, made at your car, and 2004 to 2012 models take a $125 chip key. Chevrolet dealer figures run closer to $440 and $230.

The Malibu has worn four kinds of key from 1997 on: a chipless Passlock key, GM's Circle Plus chip key, an HU100 flip key and finally a pocket fob. Your model year tells us which one to load before we leave.

Most Malibus from 1997 to 2003 use GM Passlock, so there is no chip in the key; a new one is cut to code and priced $49 to $89. The 2004 and 2005 Malibu Classic, the older body sold mostly to fleets beside the new car, gets checked by VIN before we quote. From 2004 on, the chip keys and fobs we bring are OEM or OEM-grade, programmed at the car by GM's procedure and warrantied for a year.

2004 to 2012: Transponder chip keyGM's Circle Plus key across both the 2004 and the 2008 body, with lock and unlock handled by a separate fob. A blade copied at a counter, chip unprogrammed, opens the door lock and nothing more. $230 $125 $105
2013 to 2015: Remote head keyThe HU100 flip key, blade folding into the remote. The 2016 Malibu Limited, the previous body kept on for fleets, uses it too. A plain HU100 key with the chip and no remote runs $145 as a spare. $300 $165 $135
2016 to 2025: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-start trims, which covers most cars from the 2016 redesign on; some lower-trim cars came with a fold-out-blade key, quoted by VIN)Production ended with the 2025 model year. The fob's hidden steel key works the driver's lock, and the owner's manual shows where to hold a fob with a flat battery so the car still starts. $440 $229 $211

Lost every Malibu key?

If a 2004 to 2012 Malibu has lost every key, the new chip key is cut from the VIN and, on many cars, taught through GM's timed relearn: ignition on, about ten minutes with the security light glowing, ignition off, done three times. GM's procedure builds in that half hour, and we wait it out at the car.

A 1997 to 2003 Passlock Malibu usually skips the relearn, since there is no chip, and needs only a key cut to code. On 2013 and newer cars we program the key or fob by plugging into the diagnostic port.

When no key is left, the key price goes up by $60. We check a license with the owner's name against the registration or title, and on a chip-key Malibu the lost key gets deleted from the car's memory without charge after the replacement starts it.

Chevrolet Malibu key questions

What is the circle-and-plus mark on my 2010 Malibu key?

It is GM's Circle Plus mark, which tells you the key carries a transponder chip. Malibus from 2004 through 2012 use it. A new one costs $125 with cutting and programming beside the car, against about $230 at a Chevrolet dealer. A copy of the metal alone turns the lock but leaves the engine dead.

Does a 2014 Malibu key work in a 2016 Malibu?

Usually only if the 2016 is a Malibu Limited. The Limited is the older body and shares the 2013 to 2015 flip key, while the redesigned 2016 Malibu went push-button on most versions and takes a different key. One look at the VIN answers it, and we quote the right one: $165 for the flip key or $229 for the fob.

Can a worn 2001 Malibu key be replaced without programming?

Yes, in most cases. The 1997 to 2003 Malibu uses GM Passlock, so no chip is involved and a correctly cut key starts the car. We cut it to the factory code from the VIN for $49 to $89, which helps when the old key is worn smooth. When the engine cranks and never catches while the security lamp is lit, the ignition cylinder is the usual suspect.

What does a 2019 Malibu key fob cost?

The fob costs $229, programmed at your car. The price covers the fob, the steel emergency key cut from your code, pairing to the Malibu's immobilizer and our drive. A Chevrolet service department typically lands near $440 after $100 to $180 in programming labor, and if no key works, the dealer needs the car towed in first, at $125 to $200.

Should I add a spare Malibu key before the last one goes missing?

Yes, because a spare costs less than a lost-key job. A spare key is the plain key price: $125 for a 2004 to 2012 chip key, $165 for a 2013 to 2015 flip key or $229 for a newer fob, with no $60 lost-key charge and usually no timed relearn on the older cars. We cut and program it in a single stop.
