Nissan Maxima Key Replacement in San Diego

A Maxima Intelligent Key is $249 cut and registered at your car, close to half the $520 a Nissan dealer usually asks. Maximas from 2009 through the final 2023 cars generally use one.

The Maxima is easy to sort once you know the year. Most 2004 to 2008 cars start with a turned chip key, and from 2009 until Nissan ended the Maxima after 2023, the car reads an Intelligent Key.

Two habits of the immobilizer shape the visit. It usually holds key registration shut until it gets a security PIN, which we work out on site for most years. On most Maximas it also rebuilds its list of keys during that registration, so gather each key and fob that should keep working, the drawer spare included.

2009 to 2014: Smart key for push-to-startProximity entry and push-button start arrive on this body. The fob's backup blade is cut by code with each one, and most of these cars take the shorter PIN. Nissan skipped 2015; the next Maxima was a 2016. $520 $249 $271

Lost every Maxima key?

Rebuilding access to a keyless Maxima runs in four moves: decode the cuts via VIN, cut the blade aboard the van, pull the PIN from the car, then register and test-start the new key. With the $60 lost-keys charge, a 2009 or newer Intelligent Key totals $309 and a 2004 to 2008 chip key $195. We ask to see ownership papers, the title or current registration, alongside your ID.

On most Maximas, when the new key is registered, the lost one falls off the car's list, at no extra charge, and becomes useless for starting the engine even if someone finds it. On a 2009 or newer car, that lost fob's blade still matches the driver's door, so it is worth keeping valuables out of the cabin until the old fob turns up.

Nissan Maxima key questions

Nissan stopped making the Maxima. Can I still get a fob for mine?

Yes. Ending production did not change how the car accepts a key, and the Intelligent Key for a 2009 to 2023 Maxima costs $249 with registration done curbside. The part gets matched against your VIN or the FCC ID on your old fob, and you get the number by phone ahead of the trip. Nissan service desks tend to land near $520 for that fob, programmed.

Why does a Maxima fob bought online sometimes refuse to program?

Usually it is the wrong part or it already belongs to another car. Fobs listed for the same Maxima can look identical and differ inside, so compare the FCC ID with yours before buying. We program a new, never-registered match for $79 to $119. A used one pulled from a salvage car usually will not take, and you hear that up front.

Do all my Maxima fobs have to be there when you program a new one?

Yes, on most Maximas. Registration generally erases the key list and writes back only the fobs in the car, and the car usually holds up to four. One forgotten on the kitchen counter will probably go dead to the car. To retire a fob you no longer trust, simply keep it away from the car that day and the car should stop recognizing it.

What does a chip key for a 2004 to 2008 Maxima cost?

$135 for a car with a key slot, cut from the code and registered to the immobilizer at your car, where dealers typically want about $260. A hardware store copy opens the driver's door; the immobilizer, though, never hears from it, and the car will not fire. If your Maxima has a start button instead, the price is the $249 Intelligent Key.

Can the blade inside my Maxima fob start the car?

No. On a 2009 or newer Maxima the hidden blade is for the door lock, not the ignition; the engine starts when the car reads the fob's chip. That is why a fob whose battery has gone flat still gets you inside. Your owner's manual shows how to start with a weak fob, and a fresh coin cell usually cures it. Our fobs leave the van with the blade already shaped to your door.
