Honda Pilot Key Replacement in San Diego

Pilot smart keys for 2016 and newer run $239 at the SUV, where a Honda dealer asks roughly $480. The 2009 to 2015 remote head key costs $179.

Pilot keys come in three kinds, dating from its 2003 debut: a chip key paired with a stand-alone remote, a remote head key from 2009, and from 2016 a push-start fob, usually on the EX and higher trims.

Pilots with driver's seat memory split their fobs into Driver 1 and Driver 2. Each one recalls its own seat and mirror position, so the wrong replacement leaves one driver resetting the seat every morning. We confirm which number you lost, bring that part and prove it moves the seat before you pay. The beat my dealer quote page shows how to check a dealer number against ours.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2003 to 2008: Transponder chip keyThe first-generation key: teeth along its edge, a chip inside the head, and lock buttons on a stand-alone fob. The chip gets registered to the immobilizer with a scan tool plugged in under the dash. $260 $139 $121
2009 to 2015: Remote head keyThe second generation moved to a laser-cut blade and folded it, the transponder and the lock buttons into one head. If only the buttons quit, try a fresh battery before paying for a key. $330 $179 $151
2016 to 2022: Smart key for push-to-start (EX and higher trims usually came with the smart key, while the LX usually used a $179 remote head key)The fob rides in a pocket and hides a steel emergency blade. Fobs on memory-seat trims are coded to a stored driver, so we program the number that matches your seat. $480 $239 $241
2023 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startThe fourth-generation Pilot starts with a button. Memory-seat trims still split their fobs by driver number, and the blade inside is cut to your door lock at the curb. $480 $239 $241

Lost every Pilot key?

No Pilot key at all is still a job done at the SUV. The VIN gives up the key code, the van cuts a fresh blade, and a new key is enrolled in the immobilizer where the Pilot sits, whether that is a driveway, an apartment garage or a school lot.

A keyless Pilot comes to $299 for a smart key, $239 for a 2009 to 2015 remote head key and $199 for a 2003 to 2008 chip key, each one the spare figure plus the $60 add. Nobody tows a three-row SUV to a service drive at $125 to $200.

For a memory-seat Pilot, the new fob goes into the driver slot you lost, and the lost fob is removed from the Pilot's list of keys at no charge. Ownership papers (registration or title) and matching photo ID are all we need.

Honda Pilot key questions

How do I know if my missing Pilot fob was Driver 1 or Driver 2?

Check the fob you still have and what the seat does when it unlocks the car. On a Pilot with memory seats, one fob recalls memory position 1 and the other position 2, so the missing fob is almost always the other number. We bring that exact part, pair it and check the seat with you before any money changes hands.

Does a 2016 Pilot LX have a smart key?

Usually not. The 2016 to 2022 Pilot LX generally stayed with a turn key that has remote buttons in its head, $179 at the SUV. EX and higher trims usually have the push-start smart key at $239. For comparison, Honda dealers usually ask around $330 and $480 for those two keys before tax.

Can you program a Pilot key inside a parking garage?

Yes, as long as the van can park within a short walk of the Pilot. Programming happens at the SUV through the diagnostic port, and the cutting happens in the van, so a garage level, a curb or a workplace lot all work. If the garage has a low clearance, tell us when you call so we plan where to park.

What does a first-generation Pilot key cost?

$139 for a 2003 to 2008 Pilot chip key, cut and programmed where it is parked. It has ordinary teeth along the edge and a transponder in the head, and the lock remote is a stand-alone fob. Honda parts and service typically total around $260 for the key alone, before any tow if no key works.

My Pilot only starts when I hold the fob against the start button. What is wrong?

Almost always a weak fob battery. Honda designed the push-start Pilot to read a fob with a low cell when it touches the start button, which is why it still starts that way. A new coin cell costs a few dollars. If the fob keeps failing after that, pairing it again is $79 to $119, while a replacement smart key is $239.
