Honda Civic Key Replacement in San Diego

A Civic with a start button takes a $239 smart key at your car, against about $480 at a Honda dealer. The 2016 to 2021 LX flip key is $179.

Civic keys have come in four styles from 2001 on: an edge-cut chip key, a laser-cut blade from 2006, a remote head key from 2012, and a push-start fob on the upper trims. Your year and trim pick the part and the price.

We bring the chip type Honda specifies for your generation and program it with the dealer's own procedure, in the lot where the Civic sits. That removes the tow, the service appointment and the programming labor a dealer bills as its own line, $100 to $180. The pricing page lists every Honda key side by side. For a Civic from 2000 or earlier, the VIN decides the key, so text it to us before we quote.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2005: Transponder chip keyOrdinary teeth on the blade and a transponder hidden in the plastic head. A copy made without the chip opens the doors, yet the engine will not run, and lock buttons, where fitted, sit on a separate remote. $260 $139 $121
2006 to 2011: High-security laser-cut keyThe eighth-generation Civic moved to the laser-cut blade, a groove milled down the flat of the key in place of edge teeth. Most kiosks cannot cut it; ours are cut by key code inside the van. $300 $159 $141
2012 to 2015: Remote head key (Remote head key on most trims; 2014 and 2015 cars built with a start button take the $239 smart key)The laser-cut blade, chip and lock buttons share one head, so a single key covers starting the car and locking it. $330 $179 $151
2016 to 2021: Smart key for push-to-start (Usually EX and higher trims, the Si and the Type R; the LX usually kept a flip key with the blade folded into the head, $179)A pocket fob with an emergency blade tucked inside, cut to your door lock. With a weak fob battery, touching the start button with the fob still lets the car start. $480 $239 $241
2022 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startMost eleventh-generation Civics start with a button. We match the fob to your VIN before we quote, then program it and cut its blade in one visit. $480 $239 $241

Lost every Civic key?

With no Civic key left, the VIN gives us the key code, the blade is cut inside the van and a new key is registered to the immobilizer where the car is parked. On a push-start Civic the emergency blade gets cut too, so the door still opens by hand if the fob battery fails. You show the registration or title and photo ID in your name.

Lost keys add $60 to the spare price, so a push-start Civic with no key comes to $299 at the car. The dealer figure is about $480 for the fob, after a $125 to $200 tow onto its lot. Before we pack up, the lost key gets wiped from the immobilizer's list free of charge, so whoever finds it cannot start your Civic.

Honda Civic key questions

What does a 2016 to 2021 Civic LX flip key cost?

It is $179 at your car, cut and programmed. The LX of that generation kept a turn key: the laser-cut blade folds into a head that also holds the chip and the lock buttons. A Honda dealer typically quotes about $330 for the same key, and our phone quote already includes the drive, the cutting and the programming.

Why does a copied key open my 2004 Civic but not start it?

The copy has no programmed chip. The 2001 to 2005 Civic reads a transponder in the key head before it lets the engine run, and a plain metal copy only matches the lock. A chip key cut and programmed to your car is $139 with us, compared with about $260 from a Honda service department.

How can I tell if my Civic needs a smart key?

Look for a start button on the dash. A button means a fob that stays in your pocket, which on the 2016 to 2021 Civic usually means the EX and higher trims. A key slot means a key you turn, like the LX flip key. Send a text with a dash photo and we will quote the right part.

My Civic smart key battery died. How do I start the car?

Touch the start button with the Honda logo side of the fob, then press it. The push-start Civic picks up a fob with a weak battery at that close range, which gets you home. The fob takes a coin cell that costs a few dollars at a parts store. Should a new cell fail to bring the remote back, re-pairing is $79 to $119 at your car.

Is a Civic fob from an online marketplace worth buying?

Only when it is new and the exact part for your Civic. A Honda fob already paired to another car usually cannot be paired again, and you hear that on the phone before anyone drives. A new, matching fob you bought yourself is programmed for $79 to $119, while our $239 smart key includes the fob, the emergency blade and the programming.
