Subaru Crosstrek Key Replacement in San Diego

Crosstrek remote head keys start at $179 at your car, compared with about $330 at a Subaru dealer. Crosstreks with a start button need the $259 Keyless Access fob instead.

The Crosstrek arrived as the 2013 XV Crosstrek, after Subaru's laser-cut years for the Impreza had ended, so turn-key Crosstreks all use an ordinary edge-cut blade. What changes by year is the chip inside and whether your trim starts with a button.

The XV name was dropped after 2015 without a change of key. The chip is a different story: key suppliers list a newer chip from around the 2018 redesign, so two Crosstrek keys that look alike may not be interchangeable. Your VIN sorts that out before we quote, and one price includes the blank, cutting it, programming it and the trip out.

2013 to 2017: Remote head key (From 2015, push-button cars (mainly Limited) carry the $259 Keyless Access fob)Sold as the XV Crosstrek through 2015. Its key has lock and unlock on the head, teeth along the blade and the G chip inside. For a glovebox spare, a $139 buttonless chip key starts it too. $330 $179 $151
2018 to 2023: Remote head key (Limited and other push-button cars need the $259 fob; most Base and Premium Crosstreks start with a key)The second generation moved to Subaru's newer platform, and key suppliers list the newer H chip for it. A key from a 2013 to 2017 Crosstrek is not a safe swap, so we match by VIN. $330 $179 $151
2024 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Sport, Limited and other push-button trims; Base and many Premium cars use a $179 remote head key)The third-generation Crosstrek. Its Keyless Access fob carries a backup blade for the door, cut in the van. A no-fob job on these cars includes getting past the factory alarm first. $500 $259 $241

Lost every Crosstrek key?

Paperwork comes first on a Crosstrek with no key: registration or title, plus photo ID showing the owner's name. We then look up the key code for the VIN, cut the blade, register the replacement with the car's immobilizer and erase the missing one. A turn-key Crosstrek comes to $239 all in, the $179 remote head key plus $60.

Push-button Crosstreks with no fob left, 2020 and newer especially, need extra steps Subaru added, beginning with the factory alarm. The total is $319, the $259 fob plus $60, and we confirm the job by VIN on the call; if a dealer visit suits that car better, we tell you so then.

There is no tow either way, since we work where the Crosstrek sits. The smart key page covers the fob side.

Subaru Crosstrek key questions

Can I use my old 2016 Crosstrek key on a 2019?

Probably not. The 2013 to 2017 Crosstrek uses a remote head key with the G chip, and key suppliers list a newer chip for the 2018 and newer cars. The blade may look the same, but the car has to accept the chip, so the VIN decides which key we bring. Either generation's remote head key is priced at $179.

What does a Keyless Access fob for a push-button Crosstrek run?

It is $259 at your car, and Subaru dealers generally ask about $500. That covers the fob, setting it up to start the car and work the doors, cutting the emergency blade and testing the start button. If every fob is gone, it is $319, and we confirm the job by VIN first.

Will you come out to a Crosstrek parked at a trailhead?

Yes, anywhere inside San Diego County, any day from 7 AM to 9 PM, and it costs the same as a driveway visit because the drive is included. We usually arrive 45 to 90 minutes after you call. If the registration or title is locked inside the car, tell us on the call; opening it first is a lockout, $79 to $129.

Why does my 2019 Crosstrek quote depend on the VIN and not just the year?

Because the year alone does not say whether the car has push-button start or a turned key. The VIN tells us the trim and the exact key Subaru built it with, so the van carries the right blank and you get one quote. A turn-key 2019 is $179 and a push-button one is $259, against about $330 and $500 at a dealer.
