Toyota 4Runner Key Replacement in San Diego

The 2010 to 2024 4Runner's remote head key is $169 at your truck, roughly half the $320 a Toyota dealer typically charges. Trucks with push-button start take a $249 smart key.

The 4Runner's keys come in three long stretches: chip keys through 2009, a fifteen-year fifth generation where the trim decides between a remote head key and a smart key, and a 2025 redesign with a newer fob system.

Nothing about a 4Runner key job needs the truck to move. The blade is cut to code right beside the truck, the key is registered from the driver's seat, and the warranty covers key, remote and programming for a year. How the dealer route compares is laid out on our pricing page. On a 1984 to 1997 4Runner the key gets quoted by VIN, so text that number to us.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
1998 to 2002: Transponder chip keyThird generation. Earlier trucks may have no chip, while later ones use a black-head key with the 4C chip, and on some the immobilizer data sits in the engine computer. The VIN settles both before we quote. $250 $129 $121
2003 to 2009: Transponder chip keyFourth generation. The 4C chip on the first trucks gave way to the dot-stamped 4D chip. Early trucks in this run can also store the immobilizer's key list inside the engine computer, a detail we raise during the call. $250 $129 $121
2010 to 2024: Remote head key (SR5 and TRD Off-Road trucks usually start with a turned key; Limited trucks, plus certain later high-end trims, use the $249 smart key)Fifth generation. Most turn-key trucks carry a remote head key, G chip on earlier trucks and H chip on later ones, so the stamped letter matters. A blank cut at a kiosk will work the doors and never the engine. $320 $169 $151
2025 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startSixth generation, redesigned for 2025 with newer key electronics. We look up the VIN before pricing it; when only a dealer can supply the key, you learn that before the van leaves. $500 $249 $251

Lost every 4Runner key?

No 4Runner key left: a fifth-generation remote head key totals $229 and a Limited smart key $309, the spare price plus $60 to decode the blade from the VIN and reset the immobilizer.

A 1998 to 2009 chip key truck totals $189, and if yours keeps key data in the engine computer, you hear that before we come out. Have the owner's title or registration handy, plus matching photo ID.

On 2025 and newer trucks, whether the lost-keys job happens at the truck is something we answer only after running the VIN. Every missing key is erased during the reset, so one dropped on a trail and picked up by a stranger will not start the 4Runner.

Toyota 4Runner key questions

Which 2010 to 2024 4Runners have a smart key?

Usually the Limited, from 2010 on, plus some later upper trims. SR5 and TRD Off-Road trucks usually start with a turned key, most often a remote head key at $169. Look for a start button near the steering wheel: if it is there, you need the $249 smart key, which a Toyota dealer prices near $500.

Two 4Runner keys look the same. Why will only one start my truck?

Because the chip, not the blade, decides. Fifth-generation 4Runners began with the G chip and later trucks moved to the H, and a key has to carry the right one and be registered to your truck's immobilizer. A lookalike from another truck may open the doors and nothing else. Read us the letter on your blade and we bring the match.

Does a 2003 to 2009 4Runner need engine computer work to add a spare?

Usually not, if a working black master key is at the truck: the new key is registered with that master present, at the $129 spare price. It is the lost-keys job on some early trucks in this run that can involve the engine computer, because that is where the immobilizer data sits. We confirm which case you are in by VIN before quoting.

Can you make a 4Runner key where it is parked, off pavement included?

Yes, wherever the van can get close. Everything needed to cut and program the key travels with us, so a truck at a trailhead lot, a campground or a storage yard stays where it is. Give us the location and any gate code on the call. The drive is included in the price anywhere in the county, with no trip fee on top.

Why does a 4Runner Limited key cost so much at the dealer?

A smart key there is a part plus a programming session, about $500 together, and when no key works the truck also needs a tow. We buy the fob direct and pair it to the truck for $249, or $309 with every key lost. It is the same key type Toyota specifies, covered for a year, and the price is quoted before we drive.
