Toyota RAV4 Key Replacement in San Diego

The smart key for a 2019 or newer RAV4 costs $249, programmed in your driveway, where Toyota dealers typically charge near $500. Chip keys for older RAV4s start at $129.

The RAV4 changed keys with nearly every generation: a plain chip key through 2012, a remote head key with an H chip from 2013, and push-button smart keys on most trims from 2019. The quickest tell is the dash and the blade.

Every RAV4 key we make carries the chip Toyota specifies for that year and is registered at the car with the dealer's own steps. No tow, no second trip, and the number quoted on the call holds at the car, backed for twelve months on the key, its remote and our programming. Why we cost less spells out how we keep it lower. A 1996 to 2000 RAV4 is priced from its VIN; send it by text before booking.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2005: Transponder chip keySecond-generation RAV4. A black-head chip key on an edge-cut blade, with the 4C chip on most early cars and the dot-marked 4D chip possible on the last ones. The stamp near the head, or the VIN, tells us which. $250 $129 $121
2006 to 2012: Transponder chip keyThird generation. The dot key came first and the G chip took over near the end of the run. The two chips do not mix, so we match the letter stamped under the head. $250 $129 $121
2013 to 2018: Remote head key (Remote head key on most LE and XLE cars; the Limited, and some later upper trims, used the $249 smart key)Fourth generation, and the first RAV4 with the H chip. Lock, unlock and panic ride in the key head over a conventional edge-cut blade. $320 $169 $151
2019 to 2025: Smart key for push-to-start (Cars with push-button start; early LE cars with a key-turn ignition get a $149 milled flip key)Fifth generation. The fob carries a slide-out emergency blade for the door lock, cut to match your car. $500 $249 $251
2026 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startSixth generation, redesigned for 2026. Before quoting a car this new we run its VIN, and if only the dealer can supply the key, that news comes on the first call rather than after a wasted trip. $500 $249 $251

Lost every RAV4 key?

Lose every key to a 2013 to 2018 RAV4 and the remote head key comes to $229: the $169 spare figure plus $60 for decoding the cut from the VIN and resetting the immobilizer. A 2019 or newer smart key comes to $309, and a 2001 to 2012 chip key to $189. Have the title or registration at the car, plus a photo ID whose name matches it.

The reset clears every key the RAV4 knew and registers the new ones in the same visit, so an old key found later at the bottom of a gym bag will not start the car. Many newer RAV4s also sit through a lockout period of about 16 minutes before accepting a new fob; that is time at the curb, and the quote does not change.

Toyota RAV4 key questions

Is my 2013 to 2018 RAV4 key a G or an H?

On nearly every car in this generation it is an H, stamped on the blade just below the plastic. The H chip replaced the G around the start of this generation, and they do not cross over: a G key will not start an H car. We bring the H remote head key, $169 programmed, and test it in your ignition before we leave.

My 2019 RAV4 LE has a key that folds out and no start button. Which price applies?

The milled-blade key price, $149. Early fifth-generation LE cars with a key-turn ignition came with a folding key: H chip inside, blade milled along the sides. A Toyota dealer charges about $290 for it. If there is a round start button beside the wheel, you are in the smart key row at $249 instead. A photo of the key settles it.

My RAV4 fob no longer unlocks the doors from my pocket. Is it dead?

Usually it is only tired. When hands-free entry quits but the buttons still work at close range, suspect the fob's battery first; a replacement cell is pocket change at any auto parts counter. If the fresh cell changes nothing, we test the fob at the car and, if needed, pair it again for $79 to $119 before any talk of a new key.

Is the 2026 RAV4 a job you can do at the car?

We find out before we drive, not after. The 2026 RAV4 is a new generation, so we run your VIN against the keys and programming we can do on site before quoting. If the dealer is the only route, you learn that on the first call. Where we can do it, the smart key is $249 with the same one-year warranty.

Why does the Toyota dealer charge close to double for a RAV4 key?

Two tickets and sometimes a tow. The service desk rings up the key on a parts ticket and the programming on a labor ticket, and with no working key the RAV4 has to arrive on a truck. We buy RAV4 keys direct and program them in your driveway, so $169 for a remote head key or $249 for a smart key covers everything, drive included.
