BMW X5 Key Replacement in San Diego

A smart key for a 2014 to 2018 BMW X5 is $399 in your driveway, against roughly $750 from a BMW dealer. Keys for the 2001 to 2013 X5 are $349.

Three X5 generations sit inside our price table. The first X5 uses a bladed key that turns, the 2007 to 2013 X5 a fob that presses into a slot, and the 2014 to 2018 X5 a smart key you never take out of your pocket.

Each one is programmed where the X5 is parked, whether that is a home driveway or a hospital parking structure, and one price covers key, coding and drive. The 2019 and newer X5 is a different case: its second-generation body controller often sends the key through a BMW dealer, and a VIN check during the call shows whether yours is one of those. If a dealer has already given you a number, send us that quote.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2006: European smart or remote keyThe first-generation X5 key: a fixed blade under a button-covered head, turned in the ignition like any older key. Its chip answers to the EWS module, and the blade is cut in our van before the key is coded. $650 $349 $301
2007 to 2013: European smart or remote key (All E70 models, including the X5 M from 2010)The E70 slot key: a bladeless fob that presses into the dash before you push Start, or rides in a pocket on Comfort Access cars. Programming goes through the CAS module, and a hidden blade opens the driver's door. $650 $349 $301
2014 to 2018: European smart or remote keyThe F15 smart key, running on a CR2450 cell, with push-button start and nothing to insert. From the 2019 X5 on, a BMW dealer supplies many of the keys instead, which the VIN confirms on the first call. $750 $399 $351

Lost every X5 key?

Every key gone on a pre-2014 X5 is still a driveway job. We read the immobilizer module, EWS on the first generation and CAS on the E70, sometimes with it out from behind the lower dash trim, then program a fresh key and lock out the missing ones.

Add $60 to the $349 key, so $409 in all. Bring proof you own it: your title or registration with matching photo ID.

A 2014 to 2018 X5 with nothing left takes longer, because the body controller's data is read, often on the bench, before the smart key is coded. That job is $459, the $399 key plus $60. For a 2019 or newer X5 with no key, you hear on the phone that the dealer is normally the practical route, and what they will want to see.

BMW X5 key questions

My X5 is a 2006 or a 2007. Which key does it take?

A 2006 X5 is the last of the first generation, with a fixed-blade key you turn by hand. The 2007 X5 was all new, with a fob that pushes into the dash slot. Either way the price is $349 at the car. It only changes with the 2014 model, when the $399 smart key arrived.

My 2016 X5 says the key is not detected. Is the key failing?

Usually it is the coin cell. The F15 smart key runs on a CR2450, an inexpensive cell from any auto parts store. Until you swap it, the car can still be started by holding the fob against the emergency spot BMW marks on the steering column. If the warning stays with a new cell in, a replacement smart key, coded in your driveway, is $399.

Does the X5 M or the plug-in X5 use a different key?

No. Each follows the regular X5 of its generation. The 2010 to 2013 X5 M takes the $349 slot key, the 2015 to 2018 X5 M the $399 smart key, and the 2016 to 2018 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid the same $399 smart key. Name the variant when you call, so we bring a fob with the right part number.

My 2016 X5 is down to a single key. Is a second one worth it now?

It is the smarter order of events. A second smart key cut and coded while you still have the first is $399 and a shorter visit. Lose that last key first and the job becomes $459, with the body controller read on the bench. At a BMW dealer the same key runs about $750, plus a flatbed if nothing starts the car.
