Audi A4 Key Replacement in San Diego

A key for a 2009 or newer Audi A4 is $349 in your parking space, roughly half the $680 an Audi dealer quotes. Flip keys for the 2002 to 2008 A4 are $199.

From 2002 on, the A4 has used three keys: a folding flip key through 2008, a rectangular slot key from 2009 to 2016, and a keyless fob with no slot from 2017. Your model year decides which one we cut and program.

The first two are routine work beside the car. The 2017 and newer fob can often be added in your driveway or office garage too when one working key exists, but it takes longer, and that time is inside the $349 rather than a separate labor line. At an Audi dealer the key is typically ordered by VIN and fitted one to three days later. The rest of the lineup is on the Audi key page.

2002 to 2008: Transponder chip keyThe switchblade flip key: a milled blade that folds into a black fob with remote buttons, with the chip inside the head checked by the immobilizer in the instrument cluster. Covers the first A4 of 2002 and its 2005 update. $340 $199 $141
2009 to 2016: European smart or remote key (Sedan, Avant and allroad; the 2009 A4 Cabriolet stayed on the older body and flip key)The rectangular slot key with no blade showing. It pushes into the dash to start, a spare metal blade tucked inside opens the driver's door, and the new key is written into the comfort module that stores the key data. $680 $349 $331
2017 to 2025: European smart or remote keyThe keyless fob: push-button start, with no slot for the key anywhere in the cabin. Adding a spare beside a working key is often done at the car, in a longer visit. When no key remains, parts from Audi may be needed. $680 $349 $331

Lost every A4 key?

With no A4 key left, a 2002 to 2016 car is usually still finished where it sits. Flip-key cars keep the immobilizer data in the instrument cluster, which may be pulled for a bench reading; slot-key cars keep it in the comfort module.

The job adds $60, making it $259 for a flip-key A4 or $409 for a slot-key A4, and the car forgets any key that went missing. Proof of ownership is required: a registration or title plus matching photo ID.

Phone first if a 2017 or newer A4 has no working key left. Certain cars on this platform need a replacement key or module that Audi supplies for the VIN, and if yours points that way, the call ends with that answer and a list of what to take to the dealer, not with a van in your driveway.

Audi A4 key questions

Is a 2009 Audi A4 a flip key or a slot key?

A slot key, in almost every case. The redesigned A4 arrived as a 2009 model with the rectangular key that pushes into the dash, and it is $349 at the car against about $680 at an Audi dealer. The exception is the 2009 A4 Cabriolet, which stayed on the older body and takes the $199 flip key. The VIN settles it if you are unsure.

Does the A4 allroad use the same key as the A4 sedan?

Yes, year for year. The allroad is built on the A4 underneath, so a 2013 to 2016 allroad takes the rectangular slot key and a 2017 or newer one takes the keyless fob. Both are $349 at the car. Mention on the phone that it is an allroad so the key we bring matches the part number your car expects.

Why does a key for a 2018 A4 take longer than one for a 2012 A4?

The newer platform guards its key data more closely. On a 2012 car the comfort module gives up that data in one sitting, while a 2017 or newer car needs more steps before a fresh key is accepted. The price stays at $349 either way, because the extra time is ours to absorb, not a line item added after the fact.

Will a flip key blade copied at a kiosk start my A4?

No. A blade copied at a kiosk may turn the door lock, but the engine will not run until the transponder in the head of the key has been programmed to the car. The milled A4 blade also needs a different cutter than an edge-cut key. Our $199 flip key covers the cut, the chip and a test start in your parking space.

How much less is an A4 key from you than from an Audi dealer?

About $141 less on a 2002 to 2008 flip key, $199 against roughly $340, and about $331 less on a 2009 or newer slot or keyless key, $349 against roughly $680. The dealer route can also add a $125 to $200 flatbed when nothing starts the car, plus the days spent waiting for an ordered key.
