Car Key Replacement in Downtown San Diego

Downtown, we make your key in the garage or at the curb where the car sits, East Village to Little Italy, and most keys come to $125 to $399, trip included.

Downtown cars mostly live in parking structures, so expect the key to be made in one. Residential garages in East Village and the Marina, office garages along Broadway and B Street and the surface lots near Petco Park can all work, garage rules permitting.

The standard advice is to get the car to a dealer service lane, which for downtown means the Mile of Cars down the 5 in National City or, up the 163, the Kearny Mesa dealers along Kearny Mesa Road, Convoy Street or Balboa Avenue. With no key that starts the car, that trip begins with a flatbed at $125 to $200, and pulling a car out of a low underground garage can take extra arranging before the tow even starts.

We skip the tow and the drive. Lexus smart keys are $289 here and about $580 at a dealer, and a BMW from 2010 to 2018 takes a $399 smart key, against a typical $750 at a dealer. If you are holding a written dealer quote, hold our number up against it.

The job happens where the car is parked.

Garages, towers and the ballpark lots

A garage job goes smoothly when we know four things before we arrive: the street the entrance is on, your level, the clearance posted at the entry and how a visitor gets past the gate. Tower garages in East Village, Cortez Hill and the Marina often need a resident to buzz us in or leave a pass at the front desk.

If the van will not clear the entrance, it parks at the curb, the key is cut there, and the programmer comes down to your car on foot. The convention center garage on Harbor Drive, the lots east of Petco Park and the Seaport Village lots each decide for themselves whether a service van may work there, so call first. Metered spots on India Street and Fifth Avenue are simpler.

Instead of Kearny Mesa or the Mile of Cars

Both dealer clusters are an easy drive when the car starts. When it does not, the bill grows in layers: the tow out of the garage, a service appointment, a parts order that can eat one to three days whenever the key is not on the shelf, then $100 to $180 of programming on a separate line. Add a ride back downtown while the car sits there.

European keys show the gap most. BMW's 2001 to 2013 remote key is $349 with us and roughly $650 from the dealer, and Mercedes keys up to model year 2013 are $329 here, $620 there. Anything 2014 or newer from Mercedes is a dealer-only key, which you hear during the first call, not after a wasted trip.

Convention days, the trolley and late dinners

Keys go missing at the convention center, on the walk back from dinner in the Gaslamp and on trolley platforms.

If you rode the Blue, Orange or Green Line in and the car is back at a station lot, we meet you there, because the car has to be present for programming; ring us first so the lot's rules get checked, whether it is Old Town or an Orange Line park-and-ride.

Closer in, expect lockouts in Little Italy and the Gaslamp, keys snapped off in older door locks, and City College students near Park Boulevard wanting a spare chip key before the only one disappears. Opening a locked car downtown costs $79 to $129; removing a snapped key without drilling is $89 to $149.

Downtown San Diego questions

What price should I expect for a key in Downtown San Diego?

Plan on $125 to $199 for a transponder chip key, $165 to $259 for a key whose head carries the remote, $229 to $399 for push-to-start, and $209 to $449 on European models. The call gives you the exact number for your make and year, and it covers the trip, the programming and a year-long warranty.

Can you make a key inside an underground garage?

Most of the time, yes. Tell us the entrance street, the level, the clearance painted over the entry and how a visitor gets past the gate. If the van fits, we work beside the car. If it does not, we cut the key at the curb and carry the programmer down to you, and nobody has to move the car.

I lost my keys in the Gaslamp and my car is parked in a structure. What should I bring?

Proof of ownership: a license or passport, plus the registration or title in that same name. With those, the key code comes from your VIN, the blade gets cut on our machine and programmed at your space, and the missing key is shut out by the immobilizer, free of charge. It is priced as a spare plus $60. Keep your garage ticket handy if the structure charges by the hour.

Will you come out on a Padres game night or during a big convention?

Yes, game night or not, during open hours, 7 AM to 9 PM. On those days arrival tends to sit toward the later part of our usual 45 to 90 minutes, because Harbor Drive, Park Boulevard and the garages around Petco Park fill up. Tell us the garage and level when you call and we will plan the least crowded way in.

Which Mercedes years can you key at the car?

Up to model year 2013. Anything 2014 or newer is a dealer-only key, and you should know that before we roll. For the older cars, the key is made at your parking space for $329, where the dealer typically charges $620. Audi smart keys, another common garage request, are $349 here against about $680.

Can you open my car in a Little Italy parking lot?

Yes, for $79 to $129, with the door and weatherstrip left as they were, and it works the same in a surface lot, a garage or at a meter. If the key is inside the car, that ends the job. If the key is gone for good, we move straight to making a replacement where the car sits, priced before we start.
